George Burmeister

George Burmeister is President of the Colorado Energy Group, Inc. (CEG). Founded in 1997, the CEG focuses on assisting local and state governments and the private sector with energy efficiency and renewable energy technology policy and program implementation, and the acquisition of federal appropriations for its clients. Burmeister may be best known for implementing Best Energy Efficiency Practices, and his book, Energy Management and Conservation (1992), which documented the most successful energy efficiency and renewable energy policies, legislation and regulations put in place since the 1973 oil embargo. He wrote this book while managing the National Conference of State Legislature’s (NCSL’s) Energy Program.

Burmeister was State Political Director for the Rocky Mountain Chapter of the Sierra Club, and he worked on environmental issues on behalf of Colorado U.S. Senator Timothy E. Wirth in the U.S. Senator’s Denver office. He moved to Washington, DC when he was selected as a senior political appointee in the Clinton Administration in 1993. He served President Clinton between 1993 and 1996. After his White House appointment, he was Policy Director for the National Association of State Energy Officials (NASEO), and Executive Director of Americans for Clean Energy (ACE) in Washington, D.C.

Between 2002 and 2004, Burmeister was appointed by the Bush Administration to be the Communications Chairman for the Congressionally-created State Energy Advisory Board (STEAB). He is an active (and founding) member in the Washington, DC-based Sustainable Energy Coalition.

Burmeister has a BA in Environmental Studies with a Minor in Business Administration from Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas (1981), and a Masters in Public Administration (MPA) from the University of Colorado (1989). He was one of only two students in 1989 to graduate With Distinction, and was voted the Outstanding Masters Student by the faculty.

Headquartered in Boulder, Colorado, the CEG has satellite offices in Sacramento, California and Washington, D.C.
